Dry Sift

๐Ÿ’ง Extraction First mentioned: Ep. 001

The mechanical separation of trichome gland heads from cannabis plant material by rubbing or agitating dried cannabis over fine mesh screens. The oldest and most traditional form of hash making, practised for centuries across Morocco, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. When done with skill and proper technique, dry sift can produce full melt quality hash rivalling any extraction method.

Dry sift was introduced in Episode 1 alongside bubble hash as one of the two foundational solventless methods. The key challenge with dry sift is purity โ€” a single screen pass yields roughly 75% contaminant (plant debris). This is where technique comes in. Over subsequent episodes, Bubbleman repeatedly emphasised that full melt dry sift, when properly refined, "always outshines" chemical extractions. The skill lies in working the material gently across screens at cold temperatures, making multiple passes, and understanding the difference between trichome heads (grapes) and plant debris (worms) under magnification.
