Anandamide & Osteopathic Manipulation

⚗️ Science First mentioned: Ep. 102

Research by John McPartland (2005) showing that a single osteopathic spinal manipulation treatment increased serum anandamide levels by 168% over baseline, suggesting physical manipulation of the spine can powerfully activate the endocannabinoid system.

Discussed alongside research on sound frequencies influencing immune cells and reducing inflammation. A follow-up study using gentle massage/touch found no change in serum anandamide, suggesting intensity of physical manipulation matters. The speaker speculated that deep breathing exercises might produce similar effects by mechanically engaging the spine, similar to osteopathic manipulation.
